Given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, HK Electric warns that a significant increase in fuel clause charges is expected in the middle of this year.

However, the charge will be down from the current 34 cents to 30.4 cents per unit of electricity for April, marking a 10-percent cut.

Overall, the average total net tariff next month will be 158.3 cents.

HK Electric says the charge would face an "unavoidable" and "significant" increase from mid-year if the current market conditions persist or even worsen.

Another power giant CLP, meanwhile, earlier announced a hike in fuel surcharges.

More than 30 percent of CLP's supplies are from the mainland's nuclear and renewable energy.

Analysts have said the Middle East conflict's wider impact on the electricity prices will surface in June at the earliest.

This as 70 percent of HK Electric's power generation relies on natural gas -- mainly from Australia and Qatar but the fuel prices from Australia are more stable with a longer contract signed.
