Hong Kong's five tertiary institutions took up the top 10 spots in the QS World University Rankings by subject but the city's universities also saw multiple declines in global subject rankings.

HKU's dentistry marks the city's highest-ranked subject, maintaining its world's second place after Sweden.

The Department of Education at two universities made the list, with HKU and EdUHK occupying fifth and seventh respectively, down two places and up five places year-on-year.

The performing arts subject at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts has made a big leap forward, jumping 10 places from last year to the 10th place.

CUHK nursing fell from the fifth spot to sixth.

The Department of Geography of HKU, which originally ranked 10th last year, fell one place out of the top 10 this year.

The Education Bureau says Hong Kong's higher education sector continues to gain strong international recognition. It says a total of 266 subjects offered by Hong Kong universities were ranked in the list, including five that made the world's top 10.
