Japanese authorities conveyed regrets to the trespassing of a soldier at the Chinese embassy in Tokyo and said security has since been reinforced in the area.

The case surfaced on Tuesday after Beijing lodged a protest to Tokyo, demanding preventive measures.

The Tokyo police said today that they have apprehended a member of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Forces (GSDF) who reportedly scaled the wall and forced his way into the Chinese embassy compound.

NHK reported the man left a knife behind and nobody was injured.

The GSDF confirmed the 23-year-old soldier is based at the Camp Ebino in Miyazaki Prefecture, saying officials are fully cooperating with police over the case.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara noted it was extremely regrettable that the break-in was committed even as police provided routine security. He added they have already started implementing enhanced security measures including increasing staffing to guard the Chinese embassy.
