The Philippines declared a state of national energy emergency on Tuesday to deal with the fallout from the Middle East war.

Manila is working with Washington to secure waivers and exemptions so that it can obtain oil from US-sanctioned countries to ensure supply, according to its ambassador to the US, Jose Manuel Romualdez.

As of March 20, the government said the country had around 45 days of fuel supply, and is procuring 1 million more barrels of oil to build its buffer stock.

Some Manila taxi drivers are receiving cash payouts as part of the government's subsidy programme to help cope with rising fuel prices.

But drivers say the subsidy was not enough to cover the overall rising cost of goods and travel.
