Afghanistan authorities released a US citizen after having him detained for over a year.

This as the Taliban-run nation held several Americans captive after the Islamic group's takeover in 2021.

US Academic Dennis Coyle was released on Tuesday as part of a "goodwill gesture" by the Taliban on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

This after Kabul authorities responded to a plea from Coyle's family.

Afghanistan's theocratic government detained the US citizen in January last year after accusing him of violating local laws, but never specified which ones.

Earlier, the US State Department designated Afghanistan as a sponsor of wrongful detention, and accused the country of engaging in "hostage diplomacy".

At least one other US national is believed to still be held captive by Kabul.
