Amendments have been made to the Hong Kong National Security Law. Starting today, the police can demand phone or computer passwords from those who are suspected of violating the law. The government has announced several changes to the Hong Kong National Security Law, which was introduced in 2020. Under the new rules, those who refuse to surrender passwords of their electronic devices will face one-year imprisonment and a fine of up to 100,000 dollars. The revised law also states the procedures, requirements and time limits for enforcement agencies to access materials that are subject to legal professional privilege. Another change: individuals under investigation who leave Hong Kong without permission, will face a fine of 100,000 dollars and one-year imprisonment.
