China's special envoy to the Middle East, Zhai Juan, continued his efforts to press for a peaceful resolution of the war in Iran.

Zhai on Tuesday visited Cairo where he held separate meetings with Egypt's foreign minister Badr Abdelatty and Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

Zhai said during the talks that the spread of the war would incur greater losses and impact regional economy and global energy security, adding the top priority is to reach a ceasefire.

China is willing to join hands with Egypt to play a constructive role in mediating tensions in the region, Zhai said, as he showed empathy towards Gulf states affected by the conflict.

For his part, Abdelatty said the escalation is not in line with the interests of any party and Iran must halt its hostilites towards neighbouring countries.

Conveying deep concerns about the changing situation in the Middle East, Gheit appreciated Beijing's position to call for peace and negotiations.
