A man in his 20s has been ordered to compensate a police sergeant around 420,000 dollars, plus legal costs, after pulling the officer onto an escalator during the anti-extradition protests in 2019.

The case dates back to August 11, 2019.

The 23-year-old man resisted arrest at Taikoo MTR Station and pulled a 43-year-old riot police sergeant onto an escalator.

Both fell, leaving the officer with multiple abrasions and a sprained right knee.

He was hospitalised for one day and underwent private surgery a month later to repair part of his lateral meniscus before returning to work in early 2020.

He reported avoiding escalators until mid-2022 because of mild post-traumatic stress.

As the defendant did not appear in court to contest the claim, the court held him legally responsible for "pain, suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life," as well as medical and supplement expenses.

He was previously sentenced to three months in prison for obstructing police duties.
