The Consumer Council urged members of 24/7 fitness centres to be more aware when they provide their detailed personal data. 24/7 fitness centres have gained popularity these days.

To help consumers compare basic expenses, the consumer council surveyed 11 fitness centres between November and December.

The council found that all centres offered monthly membership fee plans, ranging from 498 to 1,850 dollars.

Apart from the monthly fees, some centres required users to pay enrolment fees, non-refundable electronic key or key card fees and deposits.

While two places said a one-month membership was available on their websites, the centres required customers to enrol for at least two months.

The council also said two centres would scan or photograph the person's ID card for filling in information automatically, while nine would use facial recognition as the main access control system
and require the collection of facial images.

The consumer watchdog reminds gym users that they need to understand the reasons for providing personal data before signing up for memberships to protect their privacy.

Separately, the council tested 13 pillow models, comprising memory foam, latex and polyester material.

Most models provided better support for users of larger physique in the back-sleeping position.

The council said the person's head, neck and chest should be aligned horizontally when using a suitable pillow in the back-sleeping position.

Chief Executive, Consumer Council Alaina Shum said: "Some pillows if you use them for too long, the firmness or the height may be affected, so we advise that you need to actually check frequently the quality of the pillows. For pillows that are too high, you should change your pillows immediately."

The council added consumers should avoid pillows that are very firm.
