Artificial intelligence software OpenClaw has surged into the spotlight recently -- but also raised security concerns.

Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong says the government has reminded all its departments not to install the software, given the potential risks.

OpenClaw, a free and open-source AI agent developed by Austrian software engineer Peter Steinberger, went viral recently for its ability to independently execute tasks, including file management and handling emails on users' computer.

That's by integrating communication platforms with large language models.

However, incidents involving personal data leaks reported lately have also raised security concerns.

Over the past few days, authorities including the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Centre and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology have issued relevant risk alerts.

Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong says the government has taken note of the security risks and reminded civil servants not to install it on government computers.

Sun adds that organisations and individual users should adopt stronger authentication management on their devices to lower security risks.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner says agent-based artificial intelligence carries higher risks than chatbot-style AI platforms.

It reminds users to grant only minimal permissions, and continuously assess the risks involved to prevent personal data leakage and malicious system takeover.
