A new round of Sino-US trade talks is underway in Paris to pave the way for US President Donald Trump's potential state visit to China and meetings with President Xi Jinping in two weeks. The two delegations convened in the French capital Sunday morning. The Ministry of Commerce in Beijing stated the officials will engage in consultations on economic and trade issues of mutual concern, guided by the important consensus reached between the heads of state. The flow of rare earths, China's purchases of U.S. agricultural products and the U.S.'s hi-tech export controls are high on the agenda. China and the U.S. agreed to a one-year trade truce to dial back their tit-for-tat tariffs after the two leaders met in Busan, South Korea last year. But the Trump administration recently rolled out sweeping trade investigations into overproduction and banning imported goods made by alleged forced labour, which may lead to new tariffs. The Iran war could also be discussed during the Paris talks. Trump said Saturday that he hopes China and other countries will send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz "open and safe."
