Cathay Pacific Airways will raise its cargo flights' fuel surcharges amid the Middle East tensions. A spokesperson from the cargo sector worries that the situation would lead to an economic slowdown in Hong Kong. After raising the fuel prices of their passenger flights, Cathay Pacific Airways has also adjusted the surcharges of cargo flights. Starting Friday, the surcharge for short-haul cargo flights will rise to 3.5 from 0.9 dollars per kilogram, representing a two-fold increase. The cost for long-haul flights flying to Europe, America and Africa will become 12.9 dollars per kilogram of goods. He said the fuel price adjustment has affected his profits, as the price cannot be changed after the contract is signed. A fruit stall owner said they had to increase the price of foreign imported products, describing the measure as "inevitable." The chairman of the Hong Kong Shippers' Council forecasted that the effects of price hike will gradually penetrate the different areas of daily life in Hong Kong. He said the price hike could cause an inflation that in turns lead to an economic slowdown.
