Greater Bay Airlines will raise its fuel surcharges to non-mainland flights starting from next Wednesday. This came after Hong Kong Airlines and Cathay Pacific also raised their fuel surcharges amid the Middle East tensions. Greater Bay Airlines announced the new fuel surcharges on Friday. Passengers travelling to the Maldives will need to pay a fuel price of 541 dollars instead of the existing 284. For flights heading to other countries, including Japan and Thailand, the surcharge will rise from 142 dollars to 290. But the surcharge for mainland flights stay at 165 dollars. Apart from Greater Bay Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and HK Express have also increased their surcharges. An aviation policy expert said that the adjustment and high crude oil prices does not have a direct correlation. He said customers hold different levels of sensitivities toward airline prices and that could help determine whether an airline would adopt a more conservative approach when setting their fare.
