During a meeting convened by the 15-member United Nations Security Council, the US ambassador accused Moscow and Beijing of seeking to protect Tehran by blocking a discussion to enforce sanctions regarding its nuclear programme.

China's UN representative criticised the US for being the "instigator" of the Iranian nuclear crisis.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council moved unsuccessfully to block the work of the 1737 Sanctions Committee concerning Iran.

Russia and China have officially objected to the 90-Day report of the committee, whereas they were overruled 11-2 with two abstentions.

US ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz noted: "Today was meant to be a straightforward mandated meeting of the 1737 Committee. But unfortunately, our Russian and Chinese colleages continue to block this committee's important work as part of their collaboration with the Iranian regime."

Chinese envoy Fu Cong said it was "the United States that unilaterally withdrew" from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, triggering the Iranian nuclear crisis."

Fu also accused the US of joining Israel and resorting to "a blatant use of force against Iran" in the process of negotiation, which rendered the "diplomatic efforts futile." He said China strongly condemns such move as a violation of the international law as well as the UN Charter and principles.

Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said the US and its western allies were stoking up fear around Iran's so-called nuclear programme, although the International Atomic Energy Agency has not corroborated the allegation.

Nebenzya said Washington was just using the excuse to initiate military attacks on Iran and further escalate tensions in the Middle East.

Britian and France defended sanctions against Iran, because it failed to resolve problems related to the issue.

Iran's ambassador to the United Nations said the Security Council is abusing its powers in regards to enforcing its resolutions on his country.

Amir Saeid Iravani said: "The United States, in its capacity as the current president of the Security Council, has once again misused its position and pressured members to convene this meeting. Holding a meeting under the agenda item whose mandate has already expired is nothing less than a blatant abuse of powers and procedures of the Security Council for narrow political purposes."
