The US military has acknowledged one of its aircraft taking part in the military operation against Iran has crashed in Iraq and said it was not brought down by "hostile fire or friendly fire."

An Iran-backed armed resistance group in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack.

A US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker, a refuelling aircraft, went down in western Iraq at approximately 2 p.m. on Thursday, the US Central Command said in a statement, adding the incident occurred in "friendly airspace during Operation Epic Fury, and rescue efforts are ongoing."

The CENTCOM said two aircraft were involved in the incident, and that the second landed safely.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance group in Iraq claimed they shot down the US military refuelling plane in defense of their country's "sovereignty and airspace."

A spokesperson for the Iranian armed forces said the air defense systems in western Iraq successfully targeted the KC-135 aircraft and all six crew members on board were killed.

Media reports say this is the fourth publicly acknowledged aircraft to crash as part of the US's military campaign against Iran.
