The United Nations Security Council has voted on two competing draft resolutions regarding the current crisis in the Middle East. A Bahrain-led resolution won the support of more than 130 member states and was adopted in an overwhelming vote of 13-0. China and Russia abstained from Wednesday's voting. The draft text urged Iran to immediately cease strikes targeting the Gulf Cooperation Council countries as well as Jordan, and determined such act constitute a breach of international law. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said: "Will those in favour of the draft resolution contained in document S/2026/155, please raise their hand. Will those against the resolution please raise their hand? Will those who abstain please raise their hand?" Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran's Ambassador to the UN, said: "The resolution is a manifest injustice against my country, the main victim of a clear act of aggression. As long as the Security Council remains unable to fulfill its responsibility to maintain international peace and security, Iran has no choice but to continue to exercise its inherent right to self-defense." Earlier, the council rejected a Russian-sponsored proposal condemning Israeli-US attacks and calling on all parties to immediately halt military activities in the region. Chinese envoy Fu Cong expressed regret that the "principled and balanced" draft was not adopted. He said the Iran war should not have happened, adding it has neither legitimacy nor legal basis and armed conflicts will only breed new crises. China will continue its efforts to strive for peace, he said.
