French President Emmanuel Macron said the world needs nuclear power as a "source of progress, prosperity and impendence", citing the negative impact of fossil fuels on geopolitics amid the tensions in the Middle East.

Macron spoke at the International Nuclear Energy Summit held outside Paris.

The summit comes exactly 15 years to the day of Japan's Fukushima disaster.

But Macron said there is a need for energy that is produced at the lowest possible price, which also creates jobs and reduces CO2 emissions.

European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and Rwandan President Paul Kagame are among those scheduled to speak at the summit.
