Israeli warplanes pounded Beirut and Tehran on Friday as Iran launched another wave of retaliatory strikes against Israel and Gulf countries. There was no sign of the war letting up on its seventh day, as us Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned the US air campaign against Iran would "surge dramatically." The strikes in Lebanon were the heaviest since a 2024 ceasefire ended the last war between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah, who fired rockets at Israel in the opening days of the latest conflict. Tens of thousands have fled Beirut's suburbs and southern Lebanon after sweeping Israeli evacuation warnings. The war has escalated to affect more than a dozen countries across the Middle East and beyond. The US and Israel have battered Iran with strikes, targeting their military capabilities, leadership and nuclear program. The stated goals and timelines for the war have repeatedly shifted, as the US has at times suggested it seeks to topple Iran's government or elevate new leadership from within. The Israeli military released a video that it said showed a strike on a bunker that allegedly belonged to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei on Friday, days after his death. According to the Israeli military statement, the bunker was located "beneath the regime's leadership compound in the center of Tehran" and spanned "multiple streets" in the city centre. The statement described it as "one of the Iranian leadership's most important military command centers." Khamenei was killed before he could use the bunker, the statement said. The statement added that "approximately 50 Israeli Air Force fighter jets, guided by precise IDF intelligence, struck Ali Khamenei's underground bunker in Tehran," on Friday. Khamenei was killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes on Saturday. He was 86. Iran said it has "mass launched" ballistic missiles at Israel, according to Iranian state-owned television. Footage showed various missiles being fired into the sky. The report identified them as Khaibar, Khorramshahr 4 and Fattah. Iran said the launch marks wave 22 of 'Operation True Promise 4'. Meanwhile, Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called on the international community to help Lebanon amid the resurgence of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, warning that "a humanitarian disaster is looming" because of massive displacements. Salam blasted both Israel and Hezbollah over the current crisis saying the Lebanese state and people "did not choose this war." The Iran-backed Hezbollah has been widely criticised in Lebanon for firing rockets and drones into northern Israel leading to a wave of retaliatory airstrikes by Israel into different parts of the country. Speaking about the tens of thousands who were displaced over the past days from southern and eastern Lebanon and Beirut's southern suburbs, Salam said "they are victims of the Israeli war on Lebanon, but also of those who offered a pretext for the Israeli aggression." Speaking to heads of diplomatic missions in Beirut, Salam appealed to friends of Lebanon to support "us in this endeavour" and to help stop Israel's attacks and spare the country's infrastructure.
