A recent survey reveals that more than 60 percent of female caregivers remain sidelined from the workforce despite impressive academic credentials and professional experience.

For many female caregivers in Hong Kong, taking a break to raise a family often comes at a cost.

Over the past two years, the SVHK and Standard Chartered polled 250 female caregivers, finding that more than 60 percent of them hold qualifications ranging from diplomas to master's degrees, with at least six years of work experience.

However, they find it difficult to return to the workplace, citing a lack of flexibility, transparency and diverse options.

To help women explore their career paths the organisations launched a programme called "EmpowHER2B," which matches participants with partner organisations for a three-hour work experience.

Here is April Yuen, a mum of three who is now back in the workplace after an eight-year hiatus.

She said, "This internship helped me connect with different employers. I can have a chance to explore more opportunities that fit my schedule so I can take care of my own family. At the same time, I can also start my own career. This is a very good experience for me because I learned a lot from my new job and I feel more confident after joining this programme."

Joanna Chan also has two children, and she is serving as a mentor to inspire participants of this year's programme.

Chan said, "My company believes that my personal experience for the ways that I go through this year is a great experience to inspire other women to step into the workplace again. So I've become a mentor this year to share my personal experience to let them know they can have the work-life-family balance."

This year, the programme has attracted some 350 women, and is supported by a network of more than 60 organisations.

The programme is building a supportive network that allows women to re-enter the workforce while meeting family commitments.
