U.S. President Donald Trump has fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after months of controversy including the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal officers in Minneapolis, and lawmakers questions over a 220-million-dollar advertising contract. Democrat senators on Capitol Hill reacted to Trump's firing, and his nomination for Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace her. Kristi Noem is out as Secretary of Homeland Security. Her departure caps a tumultuous tenure overseeing immigration enforcement tactics that have been met with protests and lawsuits, as well as criticism over the response to deadly Texas floods. On Noem's watch, masked federal officers swept into Hispanic neighbourhoods of some Democratic led cities - drawing scrutiny for aggressive tactics and driving scared residents indoors. Her leadership was met with resistance following the two deadly shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal officers amid an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis and surrounding cities. Calls for her impeachment rang out in the Senate from moderates and Democrats following the shootings. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer said, "The president has fired Kristi Noem. Good riddance. But the problems at this agency ICE transcends any one person. The rot is deep." New Jersey senator Cory Booker said, "She should be held to account, frankly, for violating the constitutional rights of Americans." U.S. President Trump has picked Senator Markwayne Mullin, a Republican for Oklahoma, to replace her. Trump made the announcement on social media Thursday. Trump said he will make Noem a Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, a new security initiative he says will focus on the Western Hemisphere. Meanwhile, Mullin would need to be confirmed by the Senate and while his nomination is pending, he will be acting Homeland Security Secretary.
