White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed Spain has agreed to cooperate with Washington's operations in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened to cut off trade with Madrid if they did not do so. Leavitt said, "With respect to Spain, I think they heard the president's message yesterday loud and clear. And it's my understanding over the past several hours they've agreed to cooperate with the US military. And so I know that the US military is coordinating with their counterparts in Spain, but the president expects all of our European allies, of course, to cooperate in this long sought after mission, not just for the United States but also for Europe, to crush the rogue Iranian regime that, again, not only threatens America but also threatens our European allies as well." Meanwhile, Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles and US Ambassador to Spain Benjamin Leon Jr. met in Madrid for talks amid the diplomatic row between the two countries deepens. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for peace amid the widening conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. In contrast with the White House's claims, he said Spain would not yield to reprisals from anyone. Sanchez stated the Spanish government's position was clear and consistent, stressing respect for international law and opposing military escalation.
