Explosions sounded in Iran's capital on Wednesday as the war with the United States and Israel entered its fifth day. Amid the fighting, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly been appointed as Iran's new Supreme Leader. Elsewhere, during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, US President Donald Trump lashed out at Spain and the UK, over various grievances with Washington's NATO allies. The blasts in Tehran came at dawn, according to Iran state television. Israel said its military had struck what it said was an Iranian nuclear development compound. The IDF said the Iranian regime attempted to strengthen its nuclear arsenal, but Israel detected and tracked these movements, and now the Israeli Air Force is attacking these headquarters across Tehran. Meanwhile, the US military identified four of the first American soldiers killed in the war against Iran. Among six US military deaths so far, four soldiers were members of an Iowa unit of the US Army Reserve. They died on Sunday when a drone slammed into a US military facility in Port Shuaiba, Kuwait. Addressing the conflict, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov called for a return to political and diplomatic means to resolve the conflict in the Middle East. Alimov said Russia and China share a common position on the issue and have jointly condemned military actions in the region. Amid the fighting, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly been appointed as Iran's new Supreme Leader. Israel's defence minister said whoever Iran picks to be the country's next supreme leader, he will be "a target for elimination." Elsewhere, during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, US President Donald Trump lashed out at Spain and the UK. Trump said he wants to "cut off all trade with Spain" over NATO spending, and slammed the UK, reviving his complaints about Britain's deal to hand sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, despite his administration previously supporting the move. The remote Indian Ocean archipelago is home to a strategically important American naval and bomber base. Trump said, "In fact, I told Scott (Bessent) to cut off all dealings with Spain. Spain, first of all, it started when every European nation, at my request, paid 5 percent (of GDP to NATO), which they should be doing. And everybody was enthusiastic about it. Germany, everybody. And Spain didn't do it. And now Spain actually said that we can't use their bases." "By the way, I'm not happy with the UK either. That island (Chagos Islands) that you read about, the lease, he made it for whatever reason, he made a lease of the island. Somebody came and took it away from him. And it's taken three, four days for us to work out where we can land there. Would have been much more convenient landing there as opposed to flying many extra hours. So we are very surprised. This is not Winston Churchill that we're dealing with."
