At the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters hostilities in the war against Iran may last "far longer" than his initial projection of four to five weeks. Officials say more than 550 people in Iran have been killed as of early Monday, with more than 30 killed in Lebanon, and around a dozen dead in Israel.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected the prospect of a protracted regional conflict in the joint U.S.- Israel operation. Hegseth said the U.S. aims to eliminate Iran's ballistic missile threat, destroy Iran's navy, and ensure Tehran can't obtain a nuclear weapon.

There's fear in global energy markets, with oil prices climbing, along with a spike in European natural gas futures.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for oil and liquified natural gas and commercial shipping is severely disrupted.

In the U.S., Flowers have been placed outside an Austin, Texas bar after a man shot and killed two people and wounded more than a dozen others. Police killed the shooter and the FBI is investigating whether terrorism played any role in the violence.
