Philippine authorities said they concluded a joint exercise with Japan and the US that lasted for four days through Thursday.

The naval drill was conducted near the Bashi Channel south of Taiwan and marks the first time that the so-called Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity by the combined armed forces have expanded beyond the South China Sea.

The Philippine military carried out the exercise alongside Japan's Self-Defense Force and the US Indo-Pacific Command this week.

The Philippine side deployed two fighter jets of the country's air force on Tuesday for patrols over Batanes, the islands south of Taiwan that form the Philippines' northernmost province. Other participants included Japan's patrol aircraft and a US reconnaissance plane.

On the same day, the Philippine Navy frigate Antonio Luna and the US destroyer Dewey launched anti-submarine operations south of the Philippines' boundary with the Bashi Channel.

A spokesman for the Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army said Friday that the joint drills disrupted regional peace and stability, while vowing to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights.
