New York City may face a problem with students attending classes on Tuesday, as snow is still piled high along sidewalks, after a massive storm paralyzed the northeastern US on Monday.

New York mayor Zohran Mamdani announced schools will reopen Tuesday morning, while Long Island and other New York suburbs, as well as Philadelphia are all cancelling school again.

The weather service referred to Monday's storm as a classic "bomb-cyclone", where frigid Arctic air clashes with warmer temperatures.

Further north, the Boston Globe management called off the printing of its daily newspaper for the first time in its more than 150-year history because snow and wind kept staff from safely getting to its printing plant.

More than 5,000 flights in and out of the US were cancelled for Monday, with Boston, New York and New Jersey airports affected the most.
