The government will reduce the civil service establishment by 2 percent each year, starting from the next financial year with about 10,000 jobs expected to be slashed by April 1 next year.

Some lawmakers question today whether the position cuts would affect public services.

Responding to lawmakers' concerns at LegCo, Secretary for the Civil Service Ingrid Yeung says the government would streamline procedures and tap various technologies to minimise impacts.

Meanwhile, the government are openly recruiting for two senior positions, including the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene and the Director of Information Services for the first time.

Yeung says open recruitment for such director-level posts depends on the needs at different times -- but it may not become a regular exercise.
