Mainland railways brace for return travel rush on final day of Spring Festival holiday

Railways across the mainland are bracing for the travel rush on the last day of the Spring Festival holiday.
At Guangzhou South Railway Station, some workers say it was hard to secure a ticket while train authorities say more train services will be arranged.
Suitcase-hauling travellers filled Guangzhou South Railway Station -- with some carrying local specialties and souvenirs from their hometowns, rushing back to the city before work resumes.
This Hubei native says she hoped for a smooth year at work, noting that she brought back a suitcase of food prepared by her mother, including local delicacies from her hometown.
Another work-bound traveller -- this man from Shandong says he had spent a lot during the Spring Festival. He says he will only return to his hometown again around May or June.
Many travellers say it was so hard to secure a ticket.
This passenger from Hubei bought a ticket for a shorter journey first, and stayed on the train after reaching that stop by paying the fare difference to continue his journey.
Railway authorities estimate that 18.5 million passenger trips will be made nationwide that day with more than 2,200 additional train services arranged.
Guangzhou South Railway Station handled nearly 4.4 million passenger trips over the first eight days of the Spring Festival holiday, marking an increase of 10 percent year-on-year.
On this final day alone, it expects to serve 765 thousand passengers.
During the Spring Festival travel rush, additional overnight high-speed rail services have continued to operate to ease demand.
The Guangzhou South Railway Station representative says the station is operating at an almost "one train per minute" frequency until around February 25th.
Additional services will also be arranged after the Lantern Festival to cope with another wave of returning travellers.
