US President Donald Trump said at Thursday's inaugural Board of Peace meeting that nine members have agreed to pledge 7 billion US dollars towards a Gaza relief package.

Members of US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace, created to oversee the redevelopment of Gaza, gathered for the first time in Washington DC.

Conspicuous by their absence were leaders of almost all major countries such as China, Russia, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, while the European Union sent observers.

Attendees included former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, along with other countries including Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Hungary and Indonesia.

Still, Trump has high hopes for the Board, which some see as the US leader's tool to police the United Nations. "So today is a tremendous honour to welcome you all to the United States Institute of Peace for the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace. Very important. I believe it's a most consequential board; certainly in terms of power and in terms of prestige, there's never been anything close because these are the greatest world leaders.
Almost everybody is accepted, and the ones that haven't will be. Some are playing a little cute. It doesn't work. You can't play cute with me. They're playing a bit, but they're all joining," Trump said.

The United Nations said it will work with the Board of Peace. Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Security Council said: "As we said we will continue to work for the Board of Peace on Gaza, as it was approved and anointed in a way by the Security Council, and we want things to succeed."

UN Resolution 2803 welcomed the board to help with reconstruction efforts in Gaza, which has been devastated by two years of relentless Israeli bombing.

Participating countries are required to contribute one billion US dollars to the organisation.

With Gazans celebrating the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, humanitarian relief efforts are already underway through various agencies.

Among the next phases of the 20-point ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas is for a peacekeeping force to be stationed in the strip.

Indonesia has vowed to send 8,000 troops in what is expected to be a force of around 20,000 peacekeepers.
