Russian top officials have hosted the Cuban foreign minister for talks in Moscow, speaking out in support of the island nation as it faces blackouts and severe fuel shortages worsened by a U.S. oil embargo. Cuba has urged the U.S. not to blockade its country. Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Wednesday with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez in Moscow and reaffirmed his support for the island nation. Putin reminded his guest that Russia will not accept anything of the sort when discussing the sanctions against the country. Putin saying, "We know how difficult it has been for the Cuban people all these years, all these decades, all these decades of Cuban independence, fighting for their right to live by their own rules and defend their national interests. And now we are in a special period with new sanctions. You know how we feel about this. We will not accept anything of the sort." Rodriguez responded by thanking Russia for the solidarity in the face of the tightening of the blockade against Cuba and more recently in relation to the energy embargo that has caused as Rodriguez said "suffering to our people and creates difficult situations for our economy." This as aid in food and sanitary products from the Mexican government was being distributed Tuesday to various regions of Cuba aiming to reach vulnerable communities. The packages contained rice, beans, sardines, tuna, cookie, canned fruit and other products that will be available through rationing cards. Russian tourist companies have halted sales of package tours to the island after the Cuban government said it will not provide fuel to planes that land there. Venezuela, one of Cuba's main oil suppliers, stopped selling crude to the island in January after the U.S. captured then-President Nicolas Maduro in a pre-dawn raid and flew him to New York to face drug trafficking charges.
