The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department noted the wet market stall vacancy rate has seen a surge over the past three years. This as some lawmakers suggested authorities should relax their requirements for stall operations. The Quarry Bay Market, one of the affected facilities, saw a vacancy rate of 47 percent over the past year. Among the 96 public markets under the FEHD, 17 percent of them suffered from a vacancy rate of over 30 percent last year. At the former tourist hub of Stanley, only one stall remains active in the once crowded market. This as the FEHD said it welcomes suggestions from affected markets to tackle the issue, with proposals ranging from adding pet-friendly areas to implementing measures allowing the younger generation to have more ease starting businesses.
