HKJC hosts Year of the Horse Raceday at Sha Tin Racecourse

The Hong Kong Jockey Club celebrated the horse-themed new year with the Year of the Horse Raceday today. The club recorded a visitor total of over 98,000,setting a record in the post-COVID era. Among them, a record-smashing number of more than 20,000 tourists from the mainland and overseas visited the racecourse. Screams of excitement as spectators cheer on their favourite racehorses as they sped toward the finish line. Besides the thrilling event itself, visitors at the Sha Tin Racecourse today were also given special horse-themed souvenirs --a tradition practiced by the HKJC every Year of the Horse. As per custom, those who placed their bets spun their traditional Chinese pinwheelswishing for a year of luck. Several spectators of the new year horse races said besides their hopes of winning some cash today, they are also looking forward to watching the beloved equestrian event and enjoying the festive atmosphere.There are also tourists visiting the city for the first time who praised the local facility for its variety of amenities as well. "It's pretty amazing if you ask me.In Europe, you don't really have these kinds of things -- super amazing to see how horse racing is done over here." a Dutch tourist Quinten Chap said. "This is class -- I love it. It's good, it's different from Scotland, where I'm from.Just (hope) I don't lose too much. The more I drink the more I'll put on." a Scottish tourist Ethan Hill said. "There's a good atmosphere about the place and everyone's up for it and we're going to make some money. We've only put 500 dollars so far,but we'll see how the day goes and see how much more we make." a Scottish tourist John Mcvey said. "This (racecourse) is very impressive -- the size of it is ,compared with what we're used to. Win or lose, it's always an enjoyable time. " a Scottish tourist Alex McCROSKIE said. All eyes were on the sixth race of the day, with racehorses "Stunning Peach" and fan favourite "Top Dragon" neck and neck during the final 300 metres of the event. In a stunning turn of events, the former narrowly clenched victory from the crowd favourite, securing first place in the Year of the Horse Raceday. With the prizemoney reaching up to 3.1 million dollars,the victorious horse owner was presented with the trophy by Financial Secretary Paul Chan. To further liven up the atmosphere, the HKJC arranged various song and dance performances involving top celebrities such as Kelly Chen.
