In Sheung Wan, a long-established dried seafood shop has continued its half-a-century tradition of gathering staff on the second day of the Lunar New Year for a celebratory "hoi nin fan" -- or New Year lunch. In the spirit of the Year of the Horse, the owner of this restaurant had been busy since the morning to personally prepare a hearty meal for his employees. Among the classic new year dishes was braised dried oysters, a festive favourite symbolising prosperity. Some other auspicious dishes: braised bamboo shoots with shrimp and pork -- served as a reminder that businesses should stay sharp as well as fried fish -- symbolising "surplus" in Chinese, and lotus root -- which sounds like "abundance every year" in Chinese. The time-honoured shop set up two banquet tables serving nine dishes in total as "nine" signifies longevity and enduring prosperity in Chinese culture. The owner said the economic climate remains challenging with business falling by more than 10 percent last year. Galloping into the Year of the Horse, his wish is simple, thriving business ahead.
