It's the second day of the Year of the Horse.

Among the celebratory centrepieces is the Lunar New Year fireworks display in Hong Kong tonight.

Many spectators could be seen waiting on both sides of Victoria Harbour since this afternoon with the pyrotechnic show poised to kick off at 8 p.m.

Outside the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Centre, many citizens and tourists arrived early in the afternoon, wishing to get prime viewing spots to watch the Lunar New Year fireworks display.

Roads in Central, Wan Chai and Eastern District have been cordoned off since 6 p.m., while roads in Tsim Sha Tsui and the West Kowloon Cultural District have been off-limits in phases from 5 p.m.

The barges releasing the fireworks are already stationed at Victoria Harbour.

The theme of this year's fireworks display is "Prosperity Gallops Across Hong Kong", co-ordinated by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The 23-minute spectacle comes with a total of eight acts, during which more than 30,000 firework shells will be launched.

A variety of Chinese New Year motifs such as the number "8" and gold ingots will be showcased.

Using the iconic Victoria Harbour as the backdrop, tonight's firework show will feature horse elements and auspicious symbols to welcome the year of the horse. The display will stretch 850 metres across the harbour and reach up to 250 metres in height.
