A traditional Lunar New Year activity for locals is visiting Lam Tsuen and the wishing tree on the first day of the festival. The weather was misty on the first morning of the Horse Year, but that did not stop visitors from traveling to Lam Tsuen in Tai Po. Many gathered around the Lam Tsuen's star -- the wishing tree -- each person holding red-coloured wishing placards that's tied to an orange. The next step is to throw the placard onto the branches; the higher the placement, the greater the chance of fulfilling your wishes, apparently. But throwing your wish onto the tree in one go can be tricky. While some people managed to do so, they said the process was stressful. "I feel so relieved to take one go," said visitor Sheila. "I wish a good health (and) a happy family." Another visitor, Jan, said: "I wish, of course, prosperity and health for my family and that we can have a harmonious relationship. Actually, I expected there to be more people, so I'm quite happy that's not overcrowded, but the atmosphere is very nice." After damage to one of the original banyans in 2005, the wishing tree has been replaced by an artificial version, while the oranges are now plastic. Despite this, the pilgrimage to Lam Tsuen remains a popular ritual for many Hong Kong families. "I think I was here many, many years ago, so it was very different then," said visitor Michelle. "It was a real tree with a real orange back then. I like the real tree. I think it was more special, more natural." A golden horse statue is placed by the Jockey Club in the area for members of the public to "lead in the winner," a gesture that symbolises victory and success.
