Revellers across the world gallop into Year of the Horse

People around the world are marking the Lunar New Year with performances, fireworks and festivities. 

Whether it's the Chinese diaspora or others who celebrate the occasion, millions welcomed the Year of the Horse.

Mainlanders, meanwhile, enjoyed the annual Spring Festival gala on television featuring international pop stars.

A giant dragon weaves over a crowd of revellers. On stage, artists perform a traditional dragon dance.

This is Barrio Chino in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, where thousands are celebrating the Lunar New Year.

Local broadcaster and organiser Carlos Lin says workers have for a month been channelling the energy of a horse into welcoming the year of the horse.

Young girls perform a dance to celebrate the Lotus flower.

While another dance troupe are from the local Jing Ya Chinese Cultural and Education Foundation.

In Moscow, Russians are embracing the Lunar New Year celebrations. A Christmas tree-like monument features a large dragon curled around the trunk surrounded by lanterns.

Panda bears and plenty of Chinese tourists visit the square.

"Hi. I'm from China, happy new year!"

One vendor strikes a gong announcing that the Chinese delicacy Peking Duck is ready.

Maria Zakharova, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, tells the crowd that this celebration is three years old and has become a tradition in Russia, with an increasing number of visitors every year.

In Vietnam, a building completely covered in light. And fireworks lighting up the sky to mark the new year. Similar spectacular scenes across various cities in the country.

The Lunar New Year is the most important annual holiday in Vietnam and other countries in the region, a time for reunions with relatives and friends and enjoying festive meals. 

The mainland held its annual Spring Festival Gala, an hours-long television variety show that featured a number of international stars.

Including Irish pop group Westlife and American chart-topper John Legend.
