And from one festival to another: Rio de Janeiro's top-tier samba schools entered the Sambadrome on Monday for the second night of Carnival parades in the Brazilian city. The opening act paid tribute to singer Rita Lee, known as the "Queen of Rock" in Brazil, who died in 2023. The theme, "Rita Lee, the Patron Saint of Freedom," celebrated her irreverence, artistic legacy and counter-cultural spirit, with colourful floats, psychedelic visuals, and performers representing different moments of her career. Lee, a pioneering figure in Brazilian rock and a cultural icon associated with artistic freedom and rebellion, remains one of the country's most influential performers. The special group competition spans three nights, with samba schools battling for the championship title.
