Hong Kong's Horse of the Year in the Year of the Horse: Ka Ying Rising -- will attempt to break a long-standing record at Sha Tin Racecourse on the sixth day of the Lunar New Year.

The five-year-old star is bidding for an 18th consecutive win -- a feat that would surpass the 17-race winning streak set by Silent Witness two decades ago.

Five-year-old Ka Ying Rising has taken centre stage since two years ago -- unstoppable since beginning his winning streak in a Class 3 race, never tasting a setback for 17 consecutive races.

Last season, he was crowned Hong Kong Horse of the Year after winning seven Group One races and completing the local sprint Triple Crown -- having made his mark internationally, becoming the first Hong Kong-trained horse to win Australia's The Everest -- the world's highest prize money turf race.

Trainer of Ka Ying Rising DAVID HAYES: "I was just so relieved and happy that he could represent Hong Kong and win that richest turf race in the world."

Ka Ying Rising was later named the world's best sprinter.

This Sunday, he will take aim at another milestone.

Victory in the second leg of this season's sprint Triple Crown would see him break Silent Witness' 17-race winning streak.

Trainer of Ka Ying Rising DAVID HAYES: "I remember Silent Witness, he's got a statue at Sha Tin and he just kept winning and winning. At the end of his career, he lost his form I hope Ka Ying doesn't do that. And to have a horse compared to him, it's a real thrill but I think this horse can win a lot more races than 17. I think he's in his golden year at the moment and he could keep going."

The winning run of Silent Witness during the SARS outbreak in 2003 lifted Hong Kong's spirits.

Today, Ka Ying Rising is making Hong Kong proud through his extraordinary achievements.

Felix Coetzee, the jockey who's the partner of Silent Witness commended Ka Ying Rising this way. "I've got a lot of respect for Ka Ying Rising, he's a phenomenal horse, a really, really great horse."
