As the city rang in the Year of the Horse, festive celebrations continued on this first day of the Lunar New Year.

Among the highlights of the day is the New Year Parade which is poised to kick off shortly at 8 p.m. in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Large crowds gathered around Canton Road as early as 4 p.m. hoping to secure the best viewing spots.

Lunar New Year celebrations are set to kick into high gear tonight with the annual float parade in Tsim Sha Tsui to be held at 8 p.m.

Eager to claim the best "viewing spots," spectators already lined both sides of Canton Road at about 4 p.m.

Organisers were busy with final preparations as road closures took effect.

This year, a total of 12 floats will take part in the show, which is more than last year.

The parade will last nearly two hours.

Mrs. Leung here says she and her family have to take turns to take a toilet break and eat because they have to make sure this prime viewing spot won't be occupied.

Miss Song, a tourist from Beijing, says she visited Hong Kong before for the new year parade, noting how the floats have different characteristics every year. She recalled that there was even a pianist aboard a float in 2023.

This tourist says he is spending his Lunar New Year holidays here in Hong Kong and heard about the parade in passing.

The floats, along with 46 performance teams, will set off from the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Centre in the evening, passing through Canton Road and Nathan Road, before concluding near the Sheraton Hotel.

Canton Road has one of the free viewing zones, and the event is expected to attract 100,000 spectators.

No worries if you miss the event. You can still get an up-close look at these stunning floats later. Eight of them will be displayed at the Kai Tak Sports Park, while the other four will head to Lam Tsuen, Ocean Park, Sha Tin Racecourse and Victoria Park.
