Thousands of Argentines gathered in Buenos Aires' Chinatown to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Festivities in the Argentine capital will take place over several days, featuring free cultural, artistic and gastronomic activities.

Celebrations opened with dragon and lion dances on the main stage, alongside martial arts demonstrations, traditional and contemporary music, and live performances, including Argentine acts.

The event is organized by the Buenos Aires Chinatown Association and the Chinese Reunification Federation in Argentina, with support from the Chinese Embassy and the Buenos Aires city government. Organizers expect the participation of 288 businesses, institutions and community organizations linked to the Chinese community in the country.

Argentina's Chinese community developed in two main waves: Taiwanese families who settled in the 1970s and helped establish the Belgrano Chinatown, followed by a larger migration from China's Fujian province in the 1990s that reshaped the country's neighborhood retail sector.

Now numbering more than 180,000 people, it is one of Argentina's most dynamic immigrant communities, noted for rapid economic integration and a younger generation expanding beyond traditional family-run businesses.
