Customs has seized another batch of smuggled weight-loss jabs -- cracking a total of nine similar cases within two weeks.

About 100,000 slimming products, including injections, worth 140 million dollars were seized.

Among the smuggled goods confiscated are large caches of weight-loss jabs -- mainly from Japan, as well as injections which claim to boast anti-wrinkle effects and erectile dysfunction medicine, with some originating from Europe.

Customs said smuggling of such injections and medicines has grown more rampant in recent months amid stronger market demand, prompting authorities to step up operations.

Among the nine cases that came to light, four involved air cargo shipments.

In three other cases, customs intercepted goods intended to smuggle into Hong Kong via river trade vessels from Guangzhou.

Acting on tip-offs, officers also raided a Yuen Long residential unit serving as a storage warehouse by an online shop, with 270 slimming jabs seized.

Customs believe the online shop had only recently begun services and most jabs have not yet entered the market.

They noted the products require storage at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, according to packaging instructions.

However, during smuggling, they were handled as ordinary goods and kept at room temperature without proper storage equipment.

Four people were arrested -- two mainland men and two local women aged between 26 and 61 -- including the online shop operator.
