The Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority or HKEAA says a total of more than 58,500 have registered to sit the 2026 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, representing an increase of 5 percent year-on-year.

Around 80 percent of exam-takers are day school students. Nearly 52 percent of school candidates have registered for two elective subjects in addition to the four core subjects. About about 40 percent registered for three elective subjects.

Among the electives, the subject seeing the highest number of exam-takers is Chemistry with a total of 16,484 candidates. That's followed by Biology and Economics.

For Category C Other Language subjects, six subjects are offered with 946 enrolled -- an increase of more than 20 percent year-on-year -- and the highest on record for the HKDSE.

The most popular is Japanese with 715 taking the exam. The newly introduced subject of Urdu has 36 candidates.

The written examinations for Category A subjects of this year's HKDSE will begin on April 8th.

Practical examinations for Physical Education and Music will take place earlier, starting in late February and early March respectively.

HKEAA has already issued admission forms for candidates taking these two subjects.
