The Chief Executive, John Lee, responded to the Jimmy Lai verdict, stating that Lai's crimes are egregious and heinous, deserving of a heavy sentence of 20 years in prison. Lee said this demonstrates the rule of law, upholds justice, and brings great relief to the public. He criticized Lai for long-term exploitation of the Apple Daily, poisoning citizens, selling out the nation, and harming both the country and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) interests, with overwhelming evidence of his guilt. Lee further noted that the Lai case is the first in which someone was convicted of conspiring and colluding with foreign or external forces, posing a threat to national security. He said this case marks an important milestone for the HKSAR in safeguarding national security. He further said that the Hong Kong National Security Law exemplifies the role of a 'stabilizing force,' warning malicious actors who jeopardize national security that they cannot escape legal consequences and will be severely punished according to the law. Lee said the HKSAR will continue to unwaveringly safeguard national sovereignty, security, and developmental interests.
