The Immigration Department, in a joint operation with the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department and the Zhuhai Municipal Public Security authorities, dismantled a cross-border forgery syndicate, which recruited mainland residents to work illegally in Hong Kong.

A total of 119 people were arrested.

A large cache of fake Hong Kong identity cards and copies were seized.

The crime group was first uncovered in August last year.

It used messaging apps to set up chat groups to recruit residents for illegal work in Hong Kong, claiming that it would provide "one-stop services" including accommodation,
fake ID cards and assistance in finding jobs.

In November last year, the Hong Kong Immigration Department identified suspected illegal worker hostels, carried out raids at 38 locations, arresting 102 people.

They include two alleged ringleaders and 17 employers.

The criminal syndicate charged about 3,200 dollars for each counterfeit ID card, and the monthly fee for hostel beds in Hong Kong ranged from about 1,600 to 1,800 dollars.
