President Xi Jinping talked with US President Donald Trump over the phone after holding a video meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During the call with Trump, Xi said he attaches great importance to China–US relations and called on both sides to strengthen dialogue and communication, properly manage differences and expand cooperation.

He stressed that Taiwan is China’s territory and that China will never allow Taiwan to be separated. Xi also urged the United States to handle arms sales to Taiwan with prudence.

According to Chinese state media, Xi and Trump discussed bilateral relations as well as issues related to Taiwan and Iran. Xi said the two leaders have maintained good communication and noted that their meeting in Busan last October helped steer China–U.S. relations in a positive direction, drawing support from both peoples and the international community.

Xi also noted that China is beginning its 15th Five-Year Plan, while the United States will mark the 250th anniversary of its founding. He said both sides should follow the consensus reached by the two leaders, enhance dialogue, manage differences, accumulate mutual trust step by step, and find the right way for the two major countries to coexist. He said 2026 should become a year in which China and the United States move toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

Trump said he places importance on China’s concerns over the Taiwan issue and described US-China relations as extremely positive.

The US leader said the US-China relationship is the world’s most important bilateral relationship and said he respects President Xi. He added that under the leadership of the two heads of state, the two countries have maintained positive interaction in areas such as trade. Trump said he welcomes China’s success and is willing to strengthen cooperation to advance bilateral relations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had a “long and thorough call” with Xi covering trade, the war in Ukraine and Iran — as well as his planned visit to Beijing in April. He also said the two leaders discussed China’s purchases of U.S. oil, natural gas and agricultural products such as soybeans.

Trump said his relationship with China — and with Xi personally — is extremely good, and that both sides understand the importance of maintaining it. He said he believes the two countries will achieve positive outcomes during his remaining three-year term.
