Speaking at the Hong Kong Police College's passing out parade today, Secretary for Security Chris Tang encouraged the probationary inspectors and recruit constables to perform their duties while prioritising the well-being of residents. A celebratory atmosphere with 15 probationary inspectors and 248 recruit constables marching into the graduation ceremony performing the Chinese goosestep. While inspecting the parade, Secretary for Security Chris Tang noted several of the nation's achievements over the past five years in various fields ranging from the economy, military to technology, while Hong Kong has completed the legislation for Article 23 of the Basic Law. Tang said police officers must perform their duties while embodying the three capabilities of "having an iron will, compassion and insights", adding that they should prioritise the well-being of residents in their work. Tang hailed the sacrifices made by the police while facing challenges such as the Wang Fuk Court fire last year, stressing how officers would dig through the debris with their bare hands in hopes of recovering the remains of the deceased. He emphasised this compassion should be a source of pride for the force. Tang further noted the police should embrace new ideas and an innovative spirit to tackle the ever-evolving techniques employed by criminals. This as more than 11,000 people applied to join the force during the first three quarters of this financial year, which is an increase of 9.3 percent compared with the previous year. The Police will be extending its recruitment drive to mainland universities.
