The Fire Services Department on Sunday said it has identified nearly 260 fire safety violations at Hong Kong's commercial buildings that are regarded as high risk. The department has completed inspection operations at more than a hundred high risk commercial buildings since the Tai Po fire tragedy in November. Speaking to the media on Sunday, the department said they had deployed plain clothes officers to revisit 36 of the inspected buildings in the past two weeks and discovered 259 fire safety violations. Authorities issued 70 fire hazard abatement notices in the process, involving aspects such as obstructing fire eviction paths and not shutting fire doors. Since the establishment of the department's four District Public Safety Teams in 2025, fire services officers have inspected more than 1,300 buildings and issued over 4,000 fire hazard abatement notices. They also prosecuted 335 buildings. Authorities added that they would create a map of fire hazards through big data collected in the districts to help them formulate contingency measures.
