The Hong Kong Red Cross has awarded Hong Kong Humanity Awards to eight individuals, to honour their efforts exemplifying the spirit of humanity through selfless service. One of the awardees is a nurse who worked in Gaza. "Cherish every single life. Warming every soul with hope." This is the motto of a recipient of Hong Kong Humanity award Carman Kwok Yuk-lai, who is passionate about humanitarian work. She has participated in a number of rescue and relief measures following disasters, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2006 floods in Kenya, and the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Recounting her recent mission in Gaza, she describes it as the most tearful and heartbreaking experience. She said: "That's a one night, around nine o'clock, they called a mass casualty incident. So I didn't change my clothes. I just put on a mask and ran into the hospital tent. I went to the casualty and what I found...I was just shocked. There were lots of people and full of blood. Some people were dying and some people lost their limbs, I feel so shocked, and I just keep the move I have to save the people that I just go, I went into the tent and help together. At that time I found so many people just sent to the hospital and some people crying and screaming." Kwok remains committed to her international relief work, with plans to return to Gaza to offer further medical care and clinical training. This year, eight individuals were awarded the Hong Kong Humanity Award. They come from all walks of life, including doctors, nurses, a Chinese medicine practitioner, a businessman, a musician, and a manicurist. Additionally, Dr. Lam Pui-ying was honoured with the Hong Kong Humanity Youth Power Award for her dental service in underprivileged areas. The Hong Kong humanity award recognises individuals with outstanding humanitarian contributions, as well as those who have motivated others to participate in humanitarian work. CEO of the Hong Kong Red Cross Bonnie So said: "Every year I attend the award ceremony and I was touched. Each of them, they have their own stories. Some of them they go overseas in Gaza, some war-torn countries to help the others. But some of them they are really based in, Hong Kong. They are normal Hong Kong people just around you to do things consistently to help the others. So I think that they have the ability by telling you their own stories."
