China's population number continues to decline

Chinese Mainland's population has declined for four consecutive years. In 2025, the total population was 1,400,489,000, nearly 3.4 million fewer than in 2024.  
The National Bureau of Statistics announced that across the 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, there were 7.92 million births for the year—1.62 million fewer year-on-year—bringing the birth rate to 5.63 per thousand, a record low. The number of deaths increased by 380,000 to 11.31 million. The natural population growth rate was minus 2.41 per thousand, reducing the total to 1,400,489,000, marking four consecutive years of negative growth since 2022.
