Surveillance footage showed the dramatic moment when pedestrians fled Tuen Mun Town Plaza in panic as the knife-wielding man roamed the mall at around 7 p.m. The white-shirted knife-wielding man grabbed the handbag of a female passer-by -- and took her hostage. Police fired two shots at the suspect hiding behind the woman. From another angle, we could see more clearly the scene of panic with someone holding a young child. Police subdued the man after firing two shots. Two female passers-by appeared to flee from the man. This woman says she was just about to head out of the mall when the suspect knocked her down and she heard two loud bangs, and the police asked them to stay away -- it was terrifying. She notes that she managed to dodge the knife which swiped past her. This staff member at a nearby pharmacy says he saw people rushing out, and they heard gunshots. Before the incident, the man was roaming on the street opposite the mall, brandishing a meat cleaver in his right hand while holding a paper bag in his left hand -- he allegedly pointed at others, before turning around and entering the mall. The suspect reportedly took the meat cleaver from the back kitchen of the Donki supermarket. Surveillance footage circulating online allegedly shows the suspect snuck into the kitchen and reached for the knife right next to the staff member. It's understood that the suspect was 34 years old, of Vietnamese descent and held a Hong Kong ID card. He was found to be carrying drugs and an extendable baton.
