Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Beijing for a four-day official visit. He first met with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who described the visit as a turning point that is expected to open up new prospects for the relationship between the two countries.

Carney is attempting to repair relations with China, following years of acrimony over issues ranging from Canada's 2018 arrest of Chinese tech personality Meng Wanzhou, to Canadian tariffs on China-made electric vehicles.

His mission has been made more pressing by the higher tariffs imposed on exports to the US by President Donald Trump.

Carney is meeting with Premier Li Qiang and will meet with President Xi Jinping on Friday.
